Recently Married Taxpayers

A new marriage may seem like a whole new life is waiting for you, but there are tax changes waiting for you as well. Your tax situation has changed and many newlyweds are unaware of the tax implications. If you have recently gotten married or plan to get married in the near future, we have some tips to help you avoid stress at tax time.

  • Social Security Administration: Changes must be made to the Social Security Administration so your name and SSN will match when you file your next tax return.

  • IRS: Address changes must be submitted to the IRS

  • Notify Your Employer: Report any name and address changes to your employer to ensure receipt of your Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement.

  • Check Your Withholding: If both you and your spouse work, your combined income may place you in a higher tax bracket. Your filing options are married filing jointly or married filing separately; we will explain the best option for you.

Our tax experts in our Cumberland, Barron or Rice Lake offices can assist with the tax transitions from being single to married.
